Thanks ColinWright, has the submisson time in the url fifo changed?
- ColinWright 5y agoI'm not sure what you mean by that. The item was submitted by you now, by someone else 10 hours ago, and by someone else again 14 hours or more before that. none has gathered any discussion, so it seems reasonable that your submission should not be flagged as a dupe. Enough time has passed, it's an interesting article, and there's been no previous discussion. Waiting 12 hours for a resubmission seems reasonable, it will certainly have fallen off the "New" page by then, and it's likely to go past the eyes of a fresh audience. FWIW, I have no official standing here, just explaining my understanding from observations.
- Trouble_007 5y agoThanks again ColinWright, perhaps the duplicate url filter has been updated to include a 'no comments' flag.
- ColinWright 5y agoI know they are always paying attention to things and trying changes to improve problems they see. But the FAQ says this: Are reposts ok? If a story has not had significant attention in the last year or so, a small number of reposts is ok. Otherwise we bury reposts as duplicates. -- https://news.ycombinator.com/newsfaq.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsfaq.html Multiple times I have seen permitted dups with less than 24 hours between them ... good posts that gain no attention are often reposted to give them a second chance. Worrying about the details leads you to trying to game the system ... it's better just to roll with it. Behave nicely and the system works well. If you really want to understand the underlying details you can always ask the mods, but they are always busy, and might not have time to respond in full.
- Trouble_007 5y agoColinWright, yes, I fully understand, I belive the concept of the filter was to prevent fragmented discussions, and excessive re-posting. You can clearly see it has been an effective filter by looking back through the history of source sites. PS. I have a personal interest in this filter.
