Books are great - and certainly more cost effective for someone like Amazon to go straight to the content creators. I would like to see them do the same with music and video, but that costs a bit more to produce. There are a number of middlemen out there that need stronger competition from alternate sales channels. Big NY publishers are just a subset of incumbents holding on to a dying business model that need a good shot of disruption.
