For instance json is a subset of yaml, maybe internally jq they could use yaml libraries, consume either, output either json or input format by default and give me a flag for yaml output if I want it. As it happens, gojq, mentioned elsewhere in this thread, adds this feature, and quite a few others. Jq has served the industry admirably, but there's always room for improvement.
