In our case it's the weekend trips with the kids. Cars big enough to carry all kids are expensive and relatively rare. Renting over the weekend is expensive. And working on Fridays and Mondays makes it difficult to go out to a rental station and get one of those cars or return it in time. So in the end, it's certainly doable but more expensive than owning and creates more stress/hassle.
