Email just like all of the first generation internet protocols (like FTP) suffer from the same problem. It was born in an era where security and issues stemming from mass usage were non existent. As time went by some US companies made email almost a monopoly (Gmail) while other parties added layers of after though security (DMARC, SPF, etc) while at the same time advertisment (spam) also made the situation worse. Hosting your own email is a problem because of these things, otherwise a fun exercise (that I gave up long time ago).
