There are considerable losses on the power delivery side. The appliances don't have very efficient power supplies that convert the input voltage (e.g. 230V or 120V) down to the single digit voltages used by the clocks and LEDs. It's simply not a concern for devices that usually consume power in the kW range when operating. The simplest way to save power is to literally just pull the plug after use. It's not even much of an inconvenience either if the plug is reasonably close to the appliance.

My oven and microwaves will refuse to function unless you set the clock. It would be an inconvenience in my case.

  Sounds like bad design to me. But yeah, if that's the case I agree that's indeed a major inconvenience.

A lot of household appliances like this are hardwired at the breaker panel. I'm having a hard time believing that running to the panel before and after each use of a dishwasher, oven, washer, dryer, etc. is something anyone would actually do.

  Most ovens are hardwired, true. Washers, dryers, and dishwashers, however usually aren't hardwired (at least in countries with 240V AC) - might depend on the country, though. Personally, I've yet to come across a washing machine, dish washer, or dryer that's hardwired. Typical appliances in my region look like this [1], [2], [3], [4]. Note the cords and plugs.
