Tell carmakers that nobody uses their in-car navigation
- jleyank 4y agoIf carmakers have realized that the worm has turned, they can ditch both the hardware and software by offloading onto the smartphone. Pretty good guess that anybody buying a $$ car has a smartphone, and replacing a smartphone is way easier than replacing a piece of the dash. Maybe dealers hope people will replace cars every 2-3 years rather than drive around with busted dash hardware? All that's needed is a good audio system and a means of connecting to the smartphone. And, if people aren't into really good sound, then a not-crap audio system that can play voice well.
- jaclaz 4y ago>In 2014, another Daimler brand launched a tiny little car named smart. It came with one tiny little feature that struck me as a genius move. The base version of the car had no dash screen whatsoever, just a smartphone holder. The smart has been around forever (since 1998), maybe a specific 2014 model has this feature of no dash (but smartphone instead)? All the ones I have ever seen have a (minimal) "normal" dash.
- uberman 4y agoI use and prefer my in-car nav system to attempting to find a spot to put my phone and keep it charged.
- mPReDiToR 4y agoHave you seen the markup on updated maps? Yeah, this junk is staying in cars. Useless after the first two or three years, but who sells a car aimed at the second user?
- Mountain_Skies 4y agoIIRC, in the US, all new cars are required to have a backup camera, which means there's going to be a screen in every car already. Just be glad they're not using it to run advertisements (or are they, I have a 2003 truck so some new trends get past my notice).
