There are rules in the EU that allow newer devices only 0.5W or 1W standby power, so basically we have to thank the EU that standby devices don't kill us by thousand cuts. I recently bought a device to measure my power consumption and most devices (e.g. monitor, TV, receiver, coffee machine) only use 0 to 0.7W when in standby, so definitely negligible. However, my dvd player uses 3W in standby because it's from the 2000s (before this EU law).
btw. next to my washing machine and dishwasher the device that uses the most power over time is my 42" plasma tv (from ~2008) with 150-200W. My 32" monitor only uses 22W. My PC uses 40-60W when browsing or watching movies. 200W when playing Elden Ring.
I think it's worthwhile to check your power consumption. If anyone still has not changed their lightbulps to LEDs, please do it yesterday (a change from 40W to 10W is HUGE).
- milgrim 4y agoAnd despite these rules my Sony TV (KD-65XG9505) bought in 2019 uses 20 to 30 watts in standby. Only disabling the internal Wi-Fi and restarting it gets this down to about 1 watt. This seems to be a very common problem with Sony TVs and I have no idea how they don’t get into any kind of trouble with this.
- aequitas 4y agoI have a Sony to, standby is around 1W unless I enable some features like Airplay, then it jumps to 20W. Enabling the feature will show a warning in the UI that "this might increase power consumption". I think this is how they get away with this. They show this warning with a lot of settings. Also a lot of TV's have an energy saver picture profile which is horrible to look at for movies, but it's included to pass the rating I guess.
- milgrim 4y agoTried a lot of settings, but with enabled network I never got the standby power consumption down. It should also be expected that the TV uses the advertised amount of energy in standby mode with the default settings, which was really not the case for me. And don’t get me started on this „might increase power consumption“ message. This might actually not be Sony‘s fault, but the EU‘s, but it really gets annoying when it pops up all the time.
- aequitas 4y agoFor me (KD-55X9000H) the default settings give low power consumption. Enabling WiFi does not make a difference. Enabling HomeKit Wakeup (not Airplay, as I mentioned before) gives a huge power usage. Disabling it again doesn't bring it down. Only after a factory reset I got it down again. Took me a while to figure this out. Also, it might depend on your firmware version.
- masklinn 4y ago> it's included to pass the rating I guess. I see the automobile industry taught well.
- aequitas 4y agoIndeed, they even have their own dieselgate scandal where tv's recognise reviewers test patterns and adjust settings accordingly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhto9MmiExE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhto9MmiExE
- ars 4y agoIn the US it was in 2001: https://georgewbush-whitehouse.archives.gov/news/releases/2001/07/20010731-14.html https://georgewbush-whitehouse.archives.gov/news/releases/20... Don't know if that was before or after the EU.
