One of my old coworkers actually went around with a plug-in power meter and measured what all of his appliances were using. Ended up knocking something like $800/year off of his energy bill. That's not to say that certain modern devices aren't highly efficient in standby, but to call this a fraud just doesn't seem right at face value.
