> Show me something exciting I can do with it that I can't do with twitter, instagram, or Snapchat. This is correct. Communities grow around "something". Create an utility, a game, or anything, and you have a community form around it. It's impossible to replace facebook with a new facebook because people are already in facebook. Mastodon , Matrix etc are missing this key feature: Make it dead-simple to integrate with an existing community. Let every wordpress site easily integrate their users with mastodon or matrix, and you will see adoption. As it stands right now, people don't have a real incentive to run a server, maintain a community, and possibly be legally liable for that community. So only the typical ideologues of OSS will run instances, and they will be extra cautious because for them it is only a hobby.
