The Biden administration wants private companies to censor online speech
- verisimi 5y agoIs this something to worry about yet? This isn't a private company policy - this is the White House. Is it amazing that the administration would even consider this? Isn't there a constitutional right to free speech? Who can judge 'misinformation' anyway? Has the government (or anyone) never made a mistake?
- uberman 5y agoJust make sure if you oppose this action by the White House you also oppose it when the Florida Governor does it.
- lkjl34kljkl 5y agoWhen did Ron censor something?

- ss108 5y agoIt wants to get them to stop the spread of Covid misinformation, which they should already be doing of their own volition. Such great "speech". A real contribution to the public discourse.
- KarlKemp 5y agoThis website, which doesn't list any information on their funding or background, does claim the right to sell all your data to anybody should you be stupid enough to buy their merchandise, is a blatantly obvious right-wing content farm. Searching for reclaimthenet.org on Google lists HN on the first page of results even when I'm logged out. I guess this is disinformation that hits all the right buttons for this crowd. Yes, the government says they would prefer private companies to continue slowing down the spread of misinformation like "Covid vaccines are a jewish plot to kill your children". It's perfectly legal for governments to be concerned about the spread of disinformation, and to ask business and individuals to work against it. They are not making any laws, taxing disinformation, or in any other way violating the first amendment. The government would like its tornado warnings to be reported. If there were a sudden epidemic of fake tornado warnings, they would probably ask the media to try to correct the record, because that would be annoying and dangerous. Every time a White House press secretary takes the podium and makes a statement they would obviously like the content of that statement to be reported. Implicitly, they would also prefer the exact opposite of that statement not to be reported, because they consider it wrong. This isn't new.
