Why Americans Are Leaving Downtowns in Droves
- Mountain_Skies 5y agoIn addition to the reasons mentioned, all of which likely are contributing factors, there's also the aging and experience factor. Millennials and older Zoomers who were told growing up that living in the downtown of a major metropolitan city was the end-all, be-all of sophisticated living have discovered that other living situations and lifestyles are both enjoyable and affordable. They might not be moving to Elk Jaw, Montana and Corntropolis, Kansas but instead to second and third tier cities like Des Moines, Huntsville, and Medford.
- egberts1 5y agoIt is simple; cities did not invest enough in senior care nor youth clubs.
- egberts1 5y agoIt is simple; cities forgo building senior citizen centers and youth clubs. Also, cities make laws that hinders nice living with * onerous taxes, * reduce police forces, * crazy, expensive and lengthy building permit processes, * lax laws on homeless * strict laws on eviction * rent control * sanctuary zones harboring criminals * NIMBY mentality of land use zoning (deprived new housing) * and exorbitant pension slavishly being granted to city employees with a poor funding outlook in being able to payout at their retirement time. It’s not hard to see but politicians often bang the other drums and get their myopic voting constituents to look away from above issues and continue to vote for the same stupid politicians perpetuating the above problems.
