Netflix’s Subscriber Loss Has Destroyed Employee Morale
- vanilla-almond 4y agoI like some of Netflix's content but always have the impression that Netflix casts it net very wide - perhaps too wide? Their library stretches from low-quality reality shows to expensive high-end drama. It's a strange mix - trying to be all things to all people? To be fair to Netflix, they have invested in a lot in non-US content globally - probably more than other production/streaming services. They have also given some highly-regarded directors creative freedom and financed their films e.g Martin Scorcese (The Irishman) and Bong Joon-ho (Okja). Whether Netflix is 'crisis' mode or I don't know, but it will be interesting how Netflix changes (if at all) in the coming months.
- newbamboo 4y agoThey should have stuck to the dvd by mail model. There were so many good movies to watch back then. Lots of content doesn’t matter if it’s crappy content. I bought an antenna last year and been amazed at how much better the content is, even old shows like mash and all in the family. Tv shows that shaped our culture, but changed it for the better!
- letitbeirie 4y agoWhat's really staggering going back to an antenna is just how many channels there are to choose from now. Sure most of it comes off like they gave an AM radio station a TV studio, but a lot of it is great and all of it is free.
- jerlam 4y agoWhen/why did Netflix start compensating employees in the form of stock options? Some spot checks at levels.fyi shows mostly N/A or low (<30K) listed for stock compensation.
- mardifoufs 4y ago>Netflix employees also asked leadership to issue new stock grants to make them whole for the losses this past week, per The Information. Okay so this could've made sense if the standard compensation package at netflix included options but... they don't! Netflix salaries are 100% cash, unless you chose to buy options at a discounted rate with your salary. I guess the point of the discount is to make employees more invested in the company's success, literally. But that also means that when it does not succeed, the gamble will not pay off. That's the whole point! It's a bit weird to me that they are still asking to get compensated anyways. Even if you took a gamble that could've made you a lot more money than your colleagues would've earned if they chose a cash-only salary.
- killingtime74 4y agoIndeed, if they had made a profit would they have shared it with the company? (Obviously no)
- WheelsAtLarge 4y agoI'm with the employees ask for the moon and hope to get it. If you don't get it that's ok too you've lost nothing.
- mardifoufs 4y agoI get it too! I don't feel bad for Netflix at all, and I hope they still get paid if they can. But if I was in that situation it wouldn't even have crossed my mind to just... ask for it anyways? It's pretty bold!
