Tesla is already using cobalt-free LFP batteries in 50% of its new cars produced
- Vladimof 4y agoDoes that mean that car prices will drop a bit since Cobalt is the most expensive material used in Lithium batteries?
- toomuchtodo 4y agoNo, Tesla will capture that as margin.
- Vladimof 4y agoI have heard Musk say that they try to stay at a fixed margin.
- toomuchtodo 4y agoThere is some nuance. https://www.marketwatch.com/story/tesla-rides-higher-prices-to-fatter-profit-as-elon-musk-complains-about-costs-11650503360 https://www.marketwatch.com/story/tesla-rides-higher-prices-...
- tuatoru 4y agoInteresting that the article mentions the downsides of LFP versus NMC or NCA, but does not mention the very strong upsides: much greater safety and much longer cycle life (therefore vehicle life).
- musicale 4y agoAnd the Kobold mining economy just tanked.
- Avlin67 4y agowell LFP is the old school way of lithium, it is dirt cheap and you can order it very cheap. also much more reliable, tolerant etc. only thing is low energy density. Quality depends on moisture level at fabrication process.
