I have a photo book of the Chicago Columbian Exposition (1893). The buildings they put up throughouth the South Side parks (Jackson and Washington) were immense and often separated by man-made lagoons with small boat travel. However they were not designed to be permanent, yet one of the lesser buildings (Palace of Fine Arts, currently the Museum of Science and Industry) was upgraded to more permanent materials and is the only one remaining. It always astounds me to look at today's museum and realize it was one of the lesser buildings of the original fair.
