Just note that marriage != wedding.
A couple can get married without a wedding. On the same amount of money they would need to move in together and split the bills.
- Cthulhu_ 5y agoI mean marriage is free on tuesdays around here, you just go to the county and sign some paperwork. Marriage is a legal process, any embellishment or celebration is by choice.
- rjmunro 5y agoOut of interest, where is here? Locally in Oxford, UK, you can get married on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning for £57 (under $100) at the registry office.

- IG_Semmelweiss 5y agowhat you say is true, but I reckon the more expensive the wedding, the more enduring it probably is. Weddings are a signal. The louder the signal, then the bigger the bet, and thus, the more you have riding on that bet. Weddings are a choice, but they are a choice of sending a strong signal to others. You should not discount the powerful effect it may have over the marriage itself.
- sverhagen 5y agoAnd then there's couples getting weddings, without getting married. I.e. all the ceremony and partying to celebrate their love and commitment, without entering into the legal structure that is marriage.
- lupire 5y agoThat is going to run afoul of some common law marriage laws...
- mrtranscendence 5y agoIn that circumstance they'd be married under common law in very few, mostly low population US states (not sure about the rest of the world). My fiancée and I have been living together since 2003, and every once in a while someone will say we'd be married under common law. But it does require a little more than mere cohabitation, and -- more importantly -- Ohio doesn't have common law marriage ... not anymore, at least.
- IG_Semmelweiss 5y agowhy ? Very few states recognize common law marriage. Do you know know otherwise ?
- hugh-avherald 5y agoIs this true (in any jurisdiction)? AFAIK, a marriage is invalid without a (witnessed) wedding ceremony.
- yakubin 5y agoI suspect they meant wedding reception, the party after the formal wedding. That part eats most of expenses. The formal ceremony at Standesamt costs 42USD where I live.
- zrail 5y agoYeah but that ceremony can be performed on the spot by the clerk or judge using the license.
- tsimionescu 5y agoIn my country for example (Romania) a legal marriage requires a man and a woman (unfortunately gay marriage is not allowed) registering at the local "Civil state office", and agreeing to marry before the "Civil state officer", with at least two witnesses present. Once you do this, you are legally married. There are some further formalities to perform afterwards (e.g. your identity card must be changed to show your legal status as married, and I believe you must notify your employer of your change in legal status).
- mrtranscendence 5y agoI don't know about the broader world, but in the US there are a few states that allow common law marriage such that the only requirement is a public declaration that you're married.
