Farmed salmon tastes way better to me than wild. I think there’s some pollutant concerns with wild as well
- lr4444lr 5y agoIt tastes better likely because it is more fatty. The various toxins in farmed salmon probably accumulate in the fat tissues though, so not sure why you'd think wild is more toxic.
- stjohnswarts 5y agoYou have a source on farmed salmon being toxic? I'd think FDA (and other national equivalents) might have an issue with that...
- lr4444lr 5y agoI didn't specifically say farmed salmon was more toxic, just that the toxins we are concerned about in fish accumulate in the fat tissues. The FDA is very clear on this, even if they think the amounts are mostly of concern to pregnant and lactating women. https://www.fda.gov/food/consumers/questions-answers-fdaepa-advice-about-eating-fish-those-who-might-become-or-are-pregnant-or#V https://www.fda.gov/food/consumers/questions-answers-fdaepa-...
- oneoff786 5y agoLean salmon tastes too gamey for me. I find it very unpleasant.
- wumpus 5y agoYou're in luck! Most wild salmon is actually farmed these days. Many newspaper articles about that. On the flip side, farmed salmon doesn't have the health benefits of wild, because they don't eat things with a lot of omega-3's.
- rendang 5y agoMost wild salmon is actually farmed?!
- simulate-me 5y agoPerhaps they're referring to salmon mislabeling, a common form of food fraud. E.g. https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/food-matters/to-every-scam-there-is-a-season-report-shows-salmon-fraud-prevalent-in-winter/ https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/food-matters/to-every-s... > Overall, they found close to half of the samples were mislabeled (43 percent), and rates of mislabeling were especially higher in restaurants vs. grocery stores (67 percent, vs. 20 percent). The most common form of mislabeling was farmed Atlantic salmon being represented as” wild” salmon. These trends persisted when comparing all of their salmon data (466 samples) spanning over four years. Without knowing how much salmon is consumed at restaurants via grocery stores, it's hard to validate that "most" wild salmon is actually farmed.
- runeb 5y agoIt could also be referring to escaped farmed salmon, which can be a big problem in certain areas
- bamboozled 5y agoI’ve caught wild salmon in a nature reserve (which allowed recreational fly fishing at time of the year). It was a clean and pure place. It was insanely beautiful, pink flesh, lots of fat. Rarely have anything that good.
- oneoff786 5y agoI believe that, but that’s not really representative of typical wild salmon in a grocery store
- anonymousDan 5y agoNo way for me - I recently was given some line caught wild salmon by a friend (from west of Ireland). It was like a different fish to the usual stuff, absolutely delicious.
