- rendang 4y agoWhat I don't think is helpful about this framing is the absolute black and white dichotomy between social control and libertarian individualism, with the latter implied to be praiseworthy. It is a normal part of civilized life to persuade, nudge, encourage, and even shame your fellows away from evil and toward good. In fact, it's arguably the atomization and uprooting of individuals in modernity that leaves them susceptible to perverted versions of communnal life, whether literal cults or social media mobs.
