As educator for engineers, I would even go so far as to say your approach is good for engineering too. I had the impression that fundamentals are much easier if you played around with some real world tech. But to go back to music theory. I think, it helps when you already started a song and you're stuck. If you got a catchy melody, some theory gives you the tools to add fitting harmonies to it, etc.
