Went into this article trying to understand why these books got rejected, came out with nothing but confusion. Right wing politics don't make sense to me, even when I'm actively trying to understand. Its critical to challenge yourself and face your anxiety to be able to try new methods for solving a math problem you find hard... Whats wrong with books motivating kids to do that?
- dtagames 4y agoFrom the examples, I'd say the problem is mixing in unrelated, "feelings" information that is more akin to psychology and social development than to math. It does seem strange to ask someone to solve an arithmetic problem and then, on the same page, make notes about "their feelings." As the article points out, this soft, subjective information isn't really useful in math or science (or software!) People and feelings are important and should be studied, of course, and human needs and interactions must be part of all our decision making -- but I have to agree that these conversations don't belong in teaching math.
- shreyshnaccount 4y agoI disagree. Overcoming anxiety is important to be able to try solving a question, and talking about your feelings is a good way to overcome them. Sure, this doesn't need to be the case for older kids or uni level textbooks, but I don't see the problem in including this for younger kids who might feel intimidated by math.. And its definitely not as big a deal that they need to ban certain books. I still don't see the relation to race theory at all.
