I interviewed for some FAANGs a while ago and noticed that they were mostly interested in people who specialize in one very specific thing, and that the goal is/was to hire lots of them, all doing exactly one thing and knowing a lot about or being good at that one thing. They flat out told me they don't need generalists. One company told me they hire T-shaped people (but then had unrealistic expectations and it was more like I was supposed to know everything about everything with the same depth as a specialist). However, at least with one company it was clear that they would benefit from generalists. It might be that generalists are more useful in startup scenarios where you have to be able to deal with all kinds of situations but i'm not sure if other people have the same experience...
