US Government Report proposed Nuking the Moon, newly released Documents reveal
- retrac 5y agoNot a new idea. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_A119 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_A119 And with more conservative science goals than tunnelling to the centre to find mystery meta-stable high pressure metals, it might even be a vaguely good idea. Nuking astronomical objects would release a lot of matter. The nature of the crater produced provides details on deeper structure and density, etc. The plume of gas is mostly vaporized rock, and its elemental composition could be analyzed from Earth by spectroscopy, etc. Probably the cheapest and easiest way to find out what the deeper layers of the Moon are like. And even better if you littered the surface with seismometers before you set it off. Maybe just a bit too outside of the box thinking, though.
