I get people don't like snaps but adding a third-party repository with root access to your computer is not doing anyone any favors.
Even if it is run by a trusted community member a PPA will never have the guarantees of the packages in the distro.
- zamalek 4y agoGiven that the main contention with Snap is the first-launch performance, a viable alternative is Flatpak. I run nearly everything from it. The bizarre thing about the Snap performance issue is that it isn't present on other distros. I have heard that Snap is really, uh, snappy on Arch (although I am seriously not bothered to try it myself).
- brnt 4y agoAlthough I've no snap experience, first launch performance of Flatpak apps is a good reason for me to steer clear.
- jcastro 4y agoFlatpaks splat the files on disk just like your traditional package manager, you shouldn't be seeing any performance difference.
- brnt 4y agoIt loads however a lot more, either a Gnome or KDE base, and it shows. I've tested a few apps with their tarball/rpm versions vs Flatpak, and the latter takes seconds more, consistently. Pretty fast NVME drive too.
