I had a problem with this for 3 years after getting shingles. My immune system is not right. Went to many doctors, took a probiotic every day, etc. Still had diarrhea, but just once or twice a day.
I went to Mayo Clinic and they suggested that because of my immune system, maybe I shouldn't take a probiotic. So while I was there (a week), I stopped taking the daily probiotic. Holy crap (literally!), I started going 10x a day within 2 days.
So I started taking 2 probiotics a day, and within a couple of days it calmed down. Then I went to back to 1 a day as before, and had diarrhea once or twice a day again.
I got the bright idea, maybe I need to be on 2 a day. So did that for a few days and my problem went completely away. 2 a day was going to cost me around $36/mo.
Around the same time I discovered I was lactose intolerant. I had been having inflammation problems for quite a while with a sore a-hole, and figured it was because of the diarrhea, but it didn't go away. Had some potato soup one day and it caused me to be on the toilet many times, so I thought I'd just try going off milk for a week. No doctor ever mentioned this to me - thanks.
A few months after all this, my sister was talking to a cousin who also had diahrrea problems for years. She told her about the probiotic I was taking 2x a day and it also cleared hers up.
Now instead of taking the probiotic twice a day I make homemade yogurt and use 3 of the probiotics as a starter. Way cheaper and works great: I just eat a tablespoon every morning.
I know people say not to doctor yourself, but sometimes that turns out to be the only solution that works. Doctors don't know everything, and especially don't know everything about you.
