It sure is a fine line - putting your thing out to the world & trying to make more of the world appreciate the thing more. My hobby being an art, I get to experience this internal tug-of-war with each new work. If I do nothing, I may be the only person on earth to appreciate it, which feels really bad. If I promote with the handful of inadequate tools at my disposal, I may become lost in metrics and disappointed with cost/benefit.
