Firefly introduces the first single-board PC with an RK3588S chip – Liliputing
- rektide 4y agoI just have the hardest time believing in ARM. Stupidly uncompetitive in every way (except for hyperscalers). Chuwi (& plenty of others) make a tight tiny little quad-core celeron[1] computer (with case) that'd just whoop this, 8GB ram/128GB storage for $180. The Intel CPU is under $40. You know what it has? 8x PCIe 3.0 lanes, 2x USB 10Gbps, 4x USB 5Gbps, 8x USB 2.0, 2x SATA, dual channel memory, 4 display output ports, 5.5MB cache. In terms of raw oomph, well, ditto. N5105's tend to score about 670/2000 single/multi core in geekbench, a microsoft surface duo with Snapdragon 855 ~450/1500 on a good day. There is probably a sizable power draw difference under load, but at rest you'd be shocked how nice the Celerons do, and I'd wager the difference is less than you expect, particularly if you power-down a bunch of the controllers/accessories you'd never get with ARM. ARM is such dead ass useless junk. It's so frustrating that there are such vastly better x86 chips, offering so much more, but we keep waiting with baited breath for ARM to deliver us something, anything that is vaguely capable. It's been a decade of ARM being shitty, overpriced, hard to get, trashy cpus with few features. We finally get a modestly competent, passably performance piece of kit with some modern basics, and the board costs 2x what it should. RK3588 is one of the worst portends I've ever seen from a chip ever, and there's simply nothing else, not a single other chip on the map that anyone has any hopes of putting into systems like this. We're basically just gonna sit around & wait another 3 years until eventually we get an RPi5, who'll finally help give us something not-embarassing again at an ok price point. The low-end computer market is a joke & there is no one playing.
