Ask HN: What do you hate about Slack?
Hi HN! I'm researching a startup idea and would love to hear about your experiences using slack and what you hate about it
- john_the_writer 4y agoThreads suck.. They suck a lot. If you're in a thread and get tagged in another thread then you jump there. Now good luck finding the thread you were originally in. Tabbed threads would work a treat. If each thread spawned a new tab, that would work. Main channels view, and each thread is just a tab. We live in a browser and an IDE, tabs are easy.
- john_the_writer 4y agoThey also seemed to have removed the video/phone features. Having a quick voice chat was super awesome. Way faster than zoom. Even if you could use the zoom api to create a new meeting, and join from in "slack"
- Lior539 4y agothank you for the thoughts John!

- mritzmann 4y agoBack button (top left) or back button on my mouse works fine for me. Also, slack now supports split view (https://slack.com/help/articles/4403608802963 https://slack.com/help/articles/4403608802963).
- usrn 4y agoThe client software is SLOW. Just typing in it is unpleasant.
- christophilus 4y agoI dislike being interrupted randomly (so I don’t leave Slack running, even in do not disturb mode). I dislike how bloated it is, and I distrust it (as I do Zoom, so I only run it from the browser). I dislike that OSS projects choose it vs open alternatives. I rarely find what I’m looking for when searching.
- greenyoda 4y agoYeah, an interaction that could have easily been an asynchronous e-mail before is now an interruption (or multiple interruptions) in Slack. Unfortunately, my corporate culture is heavily Slack-oriented, so turning it off entirely isn't an option for me. I do configure my Slack channels to disable @here notifications, to avoid the people who abuse that feature. (Hey, let's interrupt 100 people with a question, not just the three who might know the answer we're looking for!) I also find it hard to search for saved messages in Slack. If someone said something in Slack that actually needs to be remembered for more than a day, I'll just copy it into an e-mail so it can be searched for, archived, forwarded, etc. If the message would have been an e-mail to begin with, it would have been less work. If a Slack message requires more than a couple of sentences as a reply, I always reply that I'll be replying by e-mail. So... not a big fan of Slack.
