I read the paper but came away feeling that their attempts to find something quantitative failed. The graphs didn't particularly correlate with the periods of decline and downfall and my guess is that if you showed the researchers the graphs before telling them it was sourceforge, they would have struggled to identify whether and when the company was failing.
