How do you square GitHub Releases and the proliferation of binary downloads there for systems with existing centralized package repositories with #2?

  Easy: there's no such thing as absolutes. Just because one thing is gaining momentum it doesn't automatically means the other thing is no longer required.

    Yesterday, I downloaded from sourceforge to build, but then stopped and did apt-get install instead. I assume the binary I installed was built from the same source I downloaded. There are no absolutes.
