Quite a long interesting read. Unless I missed it, I recall that there’s optimal solutions for sorting up to 7?? items. I can’t find the reference, but unsurprisingly I read it a dlang forum post by Andrei Alexandrescu. Anyone have a link to that aspect of sorting?
- tialaramex 5y agoUnder the section heading "Reinforcement learning for small sorts", there are diagrams of the small sorts, for 3, 4 and 5 items. They also explain that down here you're at the mercy of the physical hardware. Emitting one fewer x86 instruction does not necessarily make your program faster, still if it's not slower then smaller programs are good too.
