Congratulations. I too recently finished a first draft of my third book in a series. Current word count is 56,000, 90k is quite the achievement. Tons of extras/descriptions/flavour still to be added to mine.
>As my husband said, “Some people just dream about writing a book, but you actually did it.”
The key is to get it down. Dont edit, dont try to be clever, just get er down.
>At the same time, I was very determined to finish the novel in three months. I told myself that if I could do it, then I would spend a month (or a minimum of two weeks) not looking at my book draft after I completed it.
It's not so much about the time. Write everyday and try to throw an average 1500 words/day. Even at 90k you will achieve this in 2 months. Then you take the next month fixing the utter mess that's left over.
>As much as I fantasize (and even made a goal) of having a draft ready for an agent’s critiques, I realize I may have more years to go.
I get this. I've written 3 books now but I'm afraid of anyone reading them.
My latest book idea is interesting and I'm writing for myself.
Some time in the future we will have brain computer interfaces for gorillas. Who then achieve awakening and join earth society. The main character is a Gorilla who joined the space force as an officer. There's ongoing discrimination against Gorillas and they reverse apeism give him command of a spaceship. Yet the character is a top leader following marcus aurelius and dale carnegie with a religiousness there. From there it's basically an adventure of everything going wrong right up to the end. Space battle, cruise missiles to strike a human colony in jupiter orbit. Etc.
