You could drive an 18-wheeler through Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms
- jleyank 5y agoPolitical screed from the right. The real weakness of the Charter is the Notwithstanding clause which lets laws in whole areas of society violate the charter for 5 year periods. The joys of political compromise I guess. The complaint is that they were inconvenienced and annoyed during Covid and were unable to take over Ottawa for weeks in a street party designed to piss off local residents and weaken support for anti-covid activity. They wanted the government of Canada at the federal and various provincial levels removed, which didn't happen. They did, however, manage to bring down the leader of the Official Opposition. Pro tip: If you're going to have a political movement, its actions should be arranged to increase support rather than drive it away. Blocking international trade, shutting down a city, demanding govt overthrow aren't the best choices for broad-based support. But it did look like a fun street party, although cold/snowy at times. If you're interested in history, google Maple Spring 2012 and see how Montreal handled its summer of protests.
- allears 5y agoThanks for the summary, although I could pretty much tell it was a right-wing rant from the title, and didn't bother to click.
- version_five 5y agoYet you took the time to go into the comments and reply. The national post is not a great news source and Rex Murphy is not a great commentator. Unfortunately, if you want any kind of analysis that's outside the government sanctioned narrative, there's not a lot of choice. There are some very valid criticisms in there amidst the hyperbole.
