A full Python interpreter written in Rust
- titaniumtown 5y agoI remember testing this a few months ago, it worked, just like 2-3x slower with math it seemed. very cool project though!
- dmw_ng 5y ago> a clean implementation and no compatiblity hacks Ignoring the minor typo, this statement will cause some in the audience to frown ;) The value of an implementation like this is the compatibility hacks. Maybe take a few leaves out of the PyPy/HPy book.. PyPy has been amazing from the outset, but only a fraction of the community have been able to use it because the compatibility story initially was very weak. 15 years later and it's still not quite there, and consequently neither are the users.
- eatonphil 5y agoThe graveyard of clean Python implementations is plentiful indeed. Everyone who dropped the GIL, for example.
- throwaway81523 5y agoDon't forget that Python itself (the language) is designed around compatibility hacks, i.e. convenient implementation in the context of whatever CPython code was already there.
- kkirsche 5y agoInteresting, I had heard of PyOxidizer to produce binaries but hadn’t heard of an interpreter. Always interesting to see how different implementations approach a problem space. Thanks for sharing!
- kortex 5y agoCool project! Does having the python interpreter be written in rust confer any benefit for writing python extensions in Rust, such as less overhead for moving data in/out of the extension?
- billconan 5y agoI'm curious if it is possible to install other python packages using this? Especially those built with cpp, like numpy?
