“Biggest Assholes,” Often Middle-Aged Men, Researchers Discover
- cato_the_elder 4y agoIf all the clickbait manufactured by the media wasn't enough for you, now it seems that the "scientists" are also competing in that market.
- hirundo 4y ago> Stereotype accuracy is one of the largest and most replicable effects in all of social psychology https://www.spsp.org/news-center/blog/stereotype-accuracy-response https://www.spsp.org/news-center/blog/stereotype-accuracy-re... Another way to say that, is that bigotries are so difficult to extinguish because they are so often predictive. That is, it may be an adaptive strategy to presume that I am an asshole due to my age and gender, until I demonstrate otherwise. But "just" does not equal "adaptive".

- spacemanmatt 4y agoI don't think that conflating stereotypes with bigotry is fair, especially in this context.

- spacemanmatt 4y ago...so they're PageRanked assholes?
- cato_the_elder 4y agoI don't know, then I assume by your account the demography who are often the target of the insult "bitch" are also "PageRanked bitches"?
- spacemanmatt 4y agoYou're catching on
- spacemanmatt 4y agoStereotypes are a legitimate shortcut to critical judgment. But they are only shortcuts. Forming a conclusion of causation based on stereotypes is the epitome of sloppy, bigoted logic. And it happens a lot.
- zwieback 4y agoOh oh! Well, at least I'm one standard deviation older than the worst!
- riskneutral 4y agoWhenever I see something sexist like this, I like to imagine what kind of public outrage there would be if the gender roles were simply switched. For example, these "researchers" could have easily made a different "discovery": "Biggest Karens Often Middle-Aged Women"
