Receptionists / customer service could say the same thing. Software engineers are going to be just as replaceable soon enough. In a lot of places, they already are.
I think eventually they will be paid about equivalent to a construction worker (currently $40k). Maybe less since they dont have to be onsite or in good physical shape.
- sfblah 4y agoOn average that may be true. But actually good software engineers will always command a massive premium.

I used to think that. But the reality is that the vast majority of humanity is simply incapable of performing even basic programming tasks. It's so far outside of our normal day to day experience, that wrapping your head around the level of abstraction required even to understand a hash map is a massive undertaking for an average person. It's nothing at all like handing someone a hammer and showing them how to drive a nail. Being a dev is currently in the top 5 professions for earning potential and quality of life. Why isn't everyone doing it? Simply because they can't. Programming is really really hard, and it requires a certain combination of personality, drive, and intelligence that is far from common and can't really be taught to those that wouldn't otherwise figure it out on their own.
