War of memes: why Z-war won't end with peace
- jleyank 5y agoWar conquers territory, it doesn’t conquer people. They die off or move or give up. The Russians should know this as they participated in “colonial dreams die in Afghanistan” after Britain and before the US.
- raxxorraxor 5y agoI think the situation is different here since the cultures are similar. Putin probably hoped that the opposition towards Russia is smaller and would just accept the new hegemony. That maybe true for some eastern regions of Ukraine but not for the whole country itself and the war very likely increased opposition to Russia even more. For Afghanistan it would always have been a permanent occupation, no US or UK citizen was expected to move and live there. I still don't understand the Z. Apparently a symbol for Russia supporters but it reads like it would make fun of German accents.
- jleyank 5y agoI wonder whether the similarity made it worse? They have to be different so they emphasize the differences to have points to work with. And if they are similar Putin should have remembered that the Russian people were stoic and stolid and not all that fond of giving up.
- petre 5y agoThe Z could mean the ZAPAD-2021 (west) military exercise.
- rasz 5y agoHere is one Russian meme from 1973: Cartoon (1973) - Submarine Neptune discovers a fascist ship marked "Z" (English Translation) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5GlDj016Io https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5GlDj016Io
