Ask HN: The mask mandate was just struck down in federal court, yet no stories?
For the last two years it seems like everyday there were pro-mask, pro-lockdown, covid stories on the HN front page. Yet, in a landmark case, a Florida federal court just struck it down and masks are no longer required at airports and on planes. How can a story this important to our freedoms potentially be silenced and censored?
EDIT: Toned down some of the phrasing as it's not productive.
- hindsightbias 4y agoConspiracy of conspiracies. HN, PG, Dang, JFK Jr. and George Soros holding hands together… Breaking anews! Federal Judge strikes down two year old ruling a week or so before it is to be abandoned!
- hn_throwaway_99 4y agoYou know, today is April 18th, 2022. 4/18/22 4 + 18 = 22 so that becomes 22 / 22 which is 1 representing the single eye of ILLUMINATI!
- quantified 4y agoYou laugh. I got a full rundown of Islamic numerology from a Chicago cabdriver. 2020 and 2022 were to be especially dangerous years. So far so good.
- digisign 4y agoEveryone is done and tired of talking about it. Personally never cared much either way about masks, and thought schools being closed here for almost two years was a much bigger issue.
- Kon-Peki 4y ago> tired of talking about it. Bingo. I took the train into the city two weeks ago. Everyone was just phoning it in back then. If you had something resembling a mask somewhere near you face, that's fine. If you wanted to take it off and drink your morning coffee, that's fine. On the way home, you could nurse a beer the entire time and never wear a mask, and that's fine too. A friend that flies a lot for work said that airplanes have basically been exactly like this for a while. This "landmark ruling" was in my news, the White House reaction to it was in my news. There's no conspiracy
- sp332 4y ago7 posts in 9 hours, what more do you want? https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=false&query=mask&sort=byDate&type=story https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=false&qu...

- troydavis 4y ago> And how many of those stories were flagged and downvoted? None. Algolia only indexes active submissions, not submissions that have been flagged dead. That is, all of those Algolia results are active. And HN doesn’t have a way to downvote a submission, so by definition that’s not happening.

- sp332 4y agoIf they were flagged, then it's not really suspicious. You're worried that stories are being pushed off the front page or deleted by mods, right?

- BenjiWiebe 4y agoIt takes a combination of someone posting a story, and enough others upvoting it, for it to end up on the front page. Perhaps these two things simply haven't happened yet? This is the first I heard about it, and when I Google it, I get news articles ranging in age from 2 hours to 3 minutes ago. This is new news. Give it 48 hours, and try posting a good source article to HN. Edit, the sibling comment mentions nine postings on HN already for it. Maybe the few votes it is getting are being split up between the 9, preventing any one from gaining critical mass. Maybe you could message dang - sometimes multiple posts can be merged when referencing the same event, but I don't know what the guidelines around that are.
- mindcrime 4y agoMaybe people are just tired of talking about masks and what-not? Dunno. Try turning on showdead and see if there are a bunch of "flagged" and "dead" stories on the subject littering the "new" section? I doubt there is any conspiracy. I think people are just tired of talking about it. I wouldn't be surprised, for example, if this thread itself is flagged to death. Hell, I'll probably flag it myself now that I've thought about it a bit.
- jleyank 4y ago"Covid's over, haven't you heard?" Hence no need for a mask or other activities. Let's hope it really IS over, although a 5-day, worst-flu-ever experience is less "over" than I would prefer.
- AnimalMuppet 4y agoIn addition to what others have said: > How can a story this important to our freedoms be silenced This isn't yet a story important to our freedoms. It's just one more in a two-years-long (so far) series of back-and-forth rulings on the legality of mask mandates. It will (probably) be appealed. When it works its way through appeals and there's a Supreme Court decision, then this will be a story that is important to our freedoms, one way or the other. Until then, it's kind of "meh", at least in my view.
- nodesocket 4y agoThanks, that's a fair point. You are right, I do think this goes all the way up to SCOTUS. It's just a pity it has taken this long to get a ruling against mask mandates in my opinion.
- h2odragon 4y agoI suspect that it will be decided the Federal Government had no authority to make such mandates, and that the next time they want to over-reach their authority they will do so as if this episode had never happened.
- AnimalMuppet 4y agoWell, if it is decided that the Feds have no authority to make such mandates, then the next time they want to over-reach their authority in this particular way, it will be struck down more quickly. (Yeah, they probably will try again in the exact same way, though. These days, neither side seems to pay much attention to constitutional limits on federal authority when they're in power...)
