I haven't had that experience. I can think of many people in my life who read books yet have a very conventional, restricted worldview. I also know people who read books and regurgitate them mindlessly. If you put a parrot around different people, it'll learn new phrases -- but it'll still be a parrot. Books are nice, but I'm not sure they determine whether or not you think for yourself.
