My router is also a pretty old Intel Nuc running NixOS (https://github.com/breakds/nixos-routers/blob/main/machines/welderhelper/router.nix https://github.com/breakds/nixos-routers/blob/main/machines/...). It has been very smooth and easy to maintain.
