Still using Ubuntu here, it's become the boring choice I guess (especially as I'm using ubuntu-mate) - but I need it that way to get my work done. A lot of the froth around linux is enthusiasts distro-hopping and whatever is fashionable at the time. Bit unsure about the move to snaps as I've experienced performance and permissions issues, but that isn't a deal-breaker, and the benefits of having recent builds of apps on LTS is not to be overlooked either.
- sliken 5y agoSame here, but looking to jump. Snaps seem pretty broken, had numerous issues, and forcing popular apps into snaps is annoying, like say firefox, thunderbird, etc. Sadly looks like ubuntu is doubling down on snaps in 22.04. I'm not against containers in general, but am against snaps.
- dm319 5y agoI think this was partly driven by Firefox, but Ubuntumate is certainly shipping with flatpak and another package manager (maybe appimage, I lose track).
- bkuehl 5y agoSnaps and the continuous issues with them was the main reason for me to leave. I'm very happy with Linux Mint now. I'll use Ubuntu on the server but never again on the desktop. I get what Snap was trying to accomplish, but it failed miserably IMHO.
- sliken 5y agoHeh, well from what I can tell snaps were forced in before they were ready ... into a LTS release no less. Caused a ton of problems, they lied about adoption from multiple distros, and kept the server side closed source trying to create vendor lock in for any snaps users. A very poor showing. Linux Mint is top of my list for switching to.
- thawaya3113 4y agoThe problem is that Ubuntu isn’t the boring choice. They keep making drastic changes without much notice. For example, switching the default and recommended browser to snaps which breaks a whole bunch of extensions. Or suddenly dropping Unity and switching to Gnome, which completely changed the workflow until Canonical bridged the gaps.
