From my experience, you only become 'slower' due to avoiding challenges. When you are young, you are forced to mastering challenges: at school, college, in life (moving out, organizing your life independently), etc.
Once you are settled in this routine, there are no forced challenges anymore. You need to keep looking for them. ;)

- alach11 5y ago> you only become 'slower' due to avoiding challenges This is exactly what the study disproves. It breaks out "slowness" into the multiple components. Caution is one of these.
- jvanderbot 5y agoThat's not necessarily right, in my reading. Taking a bit longer to think before speaking / acting is not the same as avoiding challenging / novel situations.
- ParksNet 5y agoOur modern 'retirement' system is one of the greatest failures of our Civilization. We confiscate a significant portion of the income of the young and productive, and direct it so that a certain generation can sit rich and idle for decades. We would be better to abandon pensions, and direct the savings to eliminating sales and payroll taxes, to reduce Cost of Living and encourage work. The expectation should be that you keep working until you are physically incapable of doing so (where a medical disability payment is available), whilst being able to enjoy the fruits of your labor from lower taxes. There's significant evidence that work maintains the body and mind in old age anyway.
