- gitpusher 4y agoThis person's blog is very interesting. Thank you for sharing!
- davidw 4y agoMy family and I visited those same two places on the way back home to Bend from San Francisco. Well worth it if you're in the area.
- causality0 4y agoand it was only a matter of time before they were captured during a peace parley, the Modocs shot and killed General E.R.S. Canby This stood out to me. Given the attitudes and norms of the time I'm surprised shooting the general under a flag of truce didn't result in the army massacring the entire group after capturing them. There might be an interesting story or person behind that which we'll never know.
- davidw 4y agoThere's a town in Oregon, outside of Portland, named after the general: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canby,_Oregon https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canby,_Oregon
- worik 4y agoRampaging barbarians from overseas. What a catastrophe.
- throwaway934 4y agoIt was barbarians vs. barbarians. The Modoc were slave traders. https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_New_International_Encyclopædia/Modoc https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_New_International_Encyclo...
- southerntofu 4y agoExcept the Modoc were not the only massacred tribe/nation. Sure it's appalling that some people were doing slave trade but how does that justify genocide of hundreds of ethnicities/communities?
- meristohm 4y agoThe description of the defended area reminds me of Helm's Deep (The Two Towers, by JRR Tolkien). > “The cultural identity of an entire people was lost here…so settlers could graze a few cows”
