Censorship battles’ new frontier: Your public library
- bediger4000 4y agoSubtitle: "Conservatives are teaming with politicians to remove books and gut library boards" What's all this about freedom of speech, again? And whose freedom are we considering?
- cato_the_elder 4y ago> Llano County, where nearly 80 percent of the majority-White population voted for President Donald Trump > The all-female board is overwhelmingly White and Republican, records show. Yeah, we know, the Post is overwhelmed by the fact that the board of a public library in a very Republican county is mostly Republican. And the fact that it's 100% female is exempt from being overwhelming, apparently.
- salawat 4y agoI remember the days where book bannings were met with somebody setting up a table outside with multiple copies of the books on the ban list. Swear I'm bout to start doing something similar if I don't see anyone else do it.
- cato_the_elder 4y agoAlthough I share your anti-censorship sentiment, but I think you probably have an overly idealistic view on how book selection for public libraries works. It's easy to make a long list of non-obscure books which you can be almost certain you won't find in your local public library. FWIW, my own doesn't even have a subscription to a non-abridged version of a good online dictionary, but they have all of the books by Ibram X. Kendi (and multiple copies of some).
