For a while now I’ve been obsessed with the idea of an open source platform where people can trade items with NO monetary transactions allowed. Over the past few months I've been developing a website to make this happen. When I trade with others (without money) it feels incredible and markedly different. When I was younger I was into trading challenges like One Red Paperclip where each trade brings you an item of higher value. When the trade itself becomes the focus and impersonal mediums like money are gone, the items you’re trading for suddenly become more meaningful. The idea of such an exchange is not new; in the Kula Ring Exchange, necklaces and bracelets are traded JUST for the sake of the trade itself and to build up one's own reputation with the renown of the people who previously owned the item. Users of the site would be able to build 'portfolios' of items they’ve traded up to and would be able to be show off the sequence of trades on global trading boards.
