The most concerning thing about twitter is the combination of A) people on twitter thinking twitter is representative and normal, combined with B) journalists taking A as gospel.
- oh_sigh 5y agoI love articles on tabloid sites like CNN et al that have a headline of "People are freaking out over X!" And then the article is composed of 5 random people who tweeted about X.
- jandrese 5y agoAnd all of the people turn out to be bots run by the same propaganda firm pushing a narrative.
- rstupek 5y agoNot just CNN, pretty much all of the main media providers do exactly this.
- caseysoftware 5y agoAnd once they publish the article, other people share it and some portion of people say "I can't believe people are saying X!" without realizing it was 5 bots. Lather, rinse, repeat, and suddenly you have a "movement" or "trend" from absolutely nothing. Check out Ryan Holliday's "Trust me, I'm lying" to see how it works.
- inglor_cz 5y agoThe Twitter-induced infantilization of journalism isn't even funny anymore. Once I would expect journalists to dig for interesting stuff among their contacts. Sifting through Twitter cannot make up for that. "What's an invesssstigative journalisssst, my preciouss hobbitsses?" - "Something from the First Age, Sméagol."
