I have no idea about the US patent system. But it sounds so weird to me that only Amazon could do this for 20 years. It seems like a simple feature to implement for any e-commerce platform. Did this patent apply also for non US companies?

The government/patent system had no idea what to do with software patents in 1997 and were pretty, uh, liberal with them for a while.
