Auctioneer puts Space Shuttle CPUs under the hammer
- pomian 4y agoThis reminds me of the evolution of marine navigation hardware in the 70's. First there was a Loran unit. It had manual dip switches to tune frequencies. Then dials. Then someone invented a navigation computer, which took the Loran numbers by cable, to output latitude longitude. Eventually that was replaced by one machine that displayed position. The first machines were each about 24" inches wide, 36" inches deep, 16" high, and weighed 40 lbs. Each. these cost about $2000 USD each. Then hand a held unit showed up 8"X2"x6" weight 1lb. Then hand held GPS showed up, first units > $1200 USD. Eventually the Loran towers removed. Wet all know what happened to GPS after that.
