Learning garment manipulation policies toward robot-assisted dressing
- waterhouse 5y agoI found it annoying that I kept hearing people say "Even [name of famous person] puts his pants on one leg at a time." I wanted someone to make a startup with a clothes-equipping frame or robot or something so that people who used the product could put on both legs at once. I'm glad someone is working on this.

- waterhouse 5y agoHmm... A chair kind of works for the purpose. If you sit down, and get both feet off the ground, then you can indeed pull your pants up both legs simultaneously, most of the way, until the waistband reaches the point where butt meets chair. Then you have to stand back up to raise them the rest of the way. But then you might end up standing on the bottom part of the pant legs (shorts would work better here), in which case you'd probably stand on one leg to raise one side, then stand on the other leg to raise the other side; that can be avoided with some effort and pulling them up as far as possible while sitting, but... Overall, the process seems mildly uncomfortable, and not faster or better than putting the pants on one leg at a time. Victory is only achieved when the new, both-legs-at-once approach is clearly better.
- musicale 5y agoI expect the clothing itself could be improved as well. For example, there are lace-up shoes with elastic laces that look nice but don't actually need to be tied, and snap bracelets that automatically curl around your wrist without needing to be fastened.
