John Oliver vows to unleash his “creepy” blackmail on Congress
- hnlmorg 5y agoThis was such a clever approach he’s taken. I really hope it doesn’t backfire for him. Though he’s never shied away from taking risky moves in the past.
- thanatos519 5y agoFor our sake, I hope there's a dead man's switch which will release the information.
- hnlmorg 5y agoI doubt he’d have done it personally. More likely a team of researchers for the show did. So any planned assassinations would have to take out the entire production team in one swoop.
- HWR_14 5y agoKeep in mind, there isn't really any creepy blackmail. He served three ads to identified demos in DC that seemed innocuous (although maybe he also included the ID of "considering leaving their spouse"). Then he got IP addresses. There isn't really much PII, and he has strictly less data than the data brokers he bought it from.
- rossdavidh 5y agoI think it's more of a "think what I (or someone else) COULD do", plus a proof that he's not bluffing. If you saw one of those three ads, you know that he targeted you with it, and this proves he (or someone else) can find you via data brokers.
- HWR_14 5y agoRight, but if the ads are to people over 45, white, male, close to the capital, that's pretty generic.
- rossdavidh 5y agoTrue that, but if the legislator saw the ad, they'll know they were targeted.
