I think they care when there's a benefit for them. In most cases though, there probably isn't a benefit for them because you can get more likely to move on to greener pastures. Is your goal getting more training and educational resources from your employer? You can try and make a case for it by citing the benefits to a project you're working on. You might need to just focus on yourself as best as you can, when you're able to.
